My name is Ashley, better known as the Adventurista. I hail from Johnson City, Tennessee, but I currently reside in Winston-Salem, where I am a junior at Wake Forest University majoring in Health & Exercise Science and double-minoring in Journalism and Sociology. I aspire to attend medical school and dabble in medical journalism á la Dr. Sanjay Gupta.
I’m very passionate about service and have been a leader for Students Promoting Action and Responsibility in the Community (SPARC)– a pre-orientation community service program for incoming freshmen. This past fall, I coordinated the program with two other students. I lead a cooking shift for Campus Kitchen, and have served as both a participant and leader of one of VSC’s international service trips to Kolkata, India, working with Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity Organization.
In my spare time, I enjoy running, yoga, art, and photography. I also love writing and discovering new music and restaurants. With regard to music, I was WakeRadio’s Hip-Hop Music Director my sophomore year, and was for a time, Co-Manager of the Station. I have DJ’d many major on-campus events, and still DJ on the side. When it comes to food, writing, and photography, I am a photographer for both SPOON University and The Old Gold & Black student newspaper, and write for The Odyssey Online. The concept of “adventurista” thus comes into play in that I strive to try my hand at anything new and exciting.
Growing up in a culturally vibrant family with roots stemming from Jordan and Hungary, I love learning new languages (I speak 5!) and about various cultures, as well as experiencing them. I’ll be posting details of my adventures as well as many other surprises (music, food, running, thoughts, etc.), and I hope you find some enjoyment or inspiration.
